Keftedes (Meatballs)

These are a brilliant finger food snack.  They were made for gatherings and parties… even weddings when all the aunties would get together in one kitchen to make them from kilos of mince.  Mum also made them for a quick midweek meal.

KEFTEDES (CYPRIOT MEATBALLS)

TO MAKE 50

PREP TIME: 15 MINS

COOKING TIME: 30 MINS

INGREDIENTS:

  • 500g minced meat - half pork, half beef

  • 3 slices bread (made into breadcrumbs)

  • 500g potatoes 

  • 1 medium onion

  • 1 dessertspoon fresh parsley

  • 1 teaspoon dried mint

  • 1/4 teaspoon mixed spice

  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon

  • Approx 1/2 to 1 level tsp. salt & pepper to taste

  • Cooking oil for frying

METHOD:

  1. Grate the potatoes and squeeze out as much of the water as you can.

  2. Grate onion (this could probably be done in the chopper till really fine)

  3. Mix all the ingredients together.

  4. Roll into golf size balls

  5. Fry in batches in the fat over a medium heat until nicely brown all over (turning half way through to do both sides) (should take about 20 minutes each batch).

  6. Drain on kitchen towel or in a colander.
